Folklore, both in cultural and academic domain, is significant for the role it plays in the contemporary socio-economic and political life of Kerala. To document, preserve and disseminate Kerala folklore and to serve the need of the academic and cultural communities, the Centre for Folklore Studies was established in 1999 at Vatakara, under the headship of Professor Raghavan Payyanad. The activities of the Centre include: Post Graduate Course in Folklore, Short-Term Courses in Folklore, Guidance for MPhil and Doctoral students, Fieldwork, Documentation & Archiving, Seminar, Workshops, Exhibition, Publications, Website, Dissemination Programmes through FACE (Folklore Association of the Centre), Folklore project.
