The School of Folklore Studies is the one and only academic department for
folklore studies and folkloristics in Kerala, started in 1999. Being an academic discipline.
Folklore has a very short history. Before that it has been merged with other disciplines.
Folkloristics is a field study that focuses on the life of the people centred and vitality. It
is an academic subject with a strong and emotional connection with the community life.
Folkloristics could identify and imprint the indigenous culture and it could also consider
the multiplicity of the people life.
The aims and objectives of the Department is research on various tradition and
culture, data collection, documentation and dissemination of different aspects of
tradition and cultural diversity, data collection training, students to engage with
traditions, interaction with active bearer of various traditions to bridge the aspiration of
traditional and contemporary world view. The School of Folklore Studies offering
programmes such as MA Folklore, M.Phil in Folkloristics, Ph.D in Folkloristics, it is having
Kalari Training programme as a part of extension activities of the Department.
School of Folklore Studies is having a folklore archive set up from the beginning of
the Department and Folklore museum started in the year 2012, Researching-journal,
folkloristics started in the year 2009 onwards. The major extension activity of the
Department is the dissemination of folklore through folklore museum artifacts
exhibitions, achieves, publications and folk music club.
